Razia Azen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. She received her Ph.D. in Quantitative Psychology from the University of Illinois, Urbana – Champaign. She teaches graduate-level statistics courses, including a course in categorical data analysis, at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.

Cindy M. Walker is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. She received her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Illinois, Champaign – Urbana. She teaches graduate-level measurement and statistics courses, including a course in categorical data analysis, at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.

My mom didn't write half of this book. But it's still incredible anyways.

Working through this book right now. And I love it for a few reasons:

1. Very clear signposts and structure. you get a clear sense of exactly what's inside each chapter.

2. Easy-to-understand language. I'm pretty much 5 years removed from my last calculus course and I can still easily pick this up. Really all you'll need is an understanding of simple math concepts like summations or logs

3. Tangible ways to generate what you've just learned in SPSS and SAS.

I currently work for a consulting firm and this has more or less been my go to book for anything remotely related to categorical data analysis.

Written in a friendly style and covers core parts of the topic

This is written in a friendly style and covers core parts of the topic. There are some repetitive points, but it's handy if you're skipping around. I'm not related to the authors, but they do a good job of relating the content back to basic ANOVA concepts. It's also a nice size to carry around or curl up with on the sofa--not as bulky (or as comprehensive) as Agresti. This'll get the job done if you're looking for a quick read on the topic, particularly if you've taken regression and have pretty much just dealt with continuous outcome variables.

I am not sure if it was something wrong with my specific book, but the way the book is bound, the book is backwards and upside down. Also the printing on the page is off to where there is a large amount of space. It did not appear to impact any of the print to my knowledge thus far. I am not sure if this is the publisher's fault. However, I do not find this acceptable paying for a new book.

At the end, however, it is realized that Captain Nemo, from Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, has secretly been helping the settlers. A marvelous adventure story, The Mysterious Island is also notable for its modern retelling of the utopian deserted-island myth, with repeated echoes of Robinson Crusoe and the Swiss Family Robinson. This Wesleyan edition features notes, appendices and an introduction by Verne scholar William Butcher, as well as reproductions of the illustrations from the original French edition.

There has been a great resurgence of interest in Verne the last few years and especially in this title, which also was reissued recently by the Modern Library (Classic Returns, LJ 12/01). This Wesleyan edition offers the complete text apparently the version that has been available for ages was severely abridged in a new translation along with a scholarly introduction and 75 illustrations.

Warning: be VERY careful if you order this book from a 'third party' seller

If you order from a third party vendor and you are not receiving a massive, 2002 edition, 700-page, richly-illustrated (black and white) magnificent book whose cover looks exactly like that on display at Amazon then you are receiving the wrong edition. If what you get is a cheap, 1970's, small, yellowed, abridged edition that looks like it's not even worth the shipping charge, you should immediately request a refund and your refund should include the shipping charge. That was my story and, in the end, after I received my refund from an embarrassed seller, I ordered Amazon's 'new' offer and it's worth every penny.

In fact, one of my kids is reading it right now and he can't put it down. Having read the abridged version of 20,000 Leagues before this, he can't believe why anyone would bother with the abridged editions.

Just a few words about this book. Besides the full translation and more than 30 pages of introductory materials, you get all the original 154 drawings found in the first French edition as well as images of the original covers. The translation quality is beyond reproach, the typeface is legible. If I have any issue with this edition, it's got to be the binding. The book is simply too massive to fit comfortably inside a paperback binding. I wish it was issued as a 2-volume set.

Oh, well... I am still VERY happy with what I got.

An Epic Of Early Science Fiction

"The Mysterious Island" is the second book in the Early Classics of Science Fiction series which is being published by Wesleyan University Press. This novel is a much better choice for the series than Verne's "Invasion of the Sea". Although not as well known as some of Verne's novels, it is certainly a better representation of his style than "Invasion of the Sea" was. As with the first in the series, this release features a new and unabridged translation, which is much superior to previous translations. They also include a wealth of material about the history of previous translations, the inception of the novel, the historical context of the novel, and they have done a fantastic job of including notes in the novel itself, explaining where Verne is making references to other works, where he has made errors, and other interesting information regarding the text of the novel itself.

The novel was first published in "Magasin" from January 1st, 1874 through December 15th of 1875. It is not as good as his more famous works, but it is still worth reading, especially this new translation. It is the tale of five men who find themselves stranded on an island, and who through the course of trying to survive notice mysterious happenings and become convinced that there is one or more benefactors helping them. The one movie I saw bearing the name of this novel, bears little resemblance to Verne's story. Absent from the novel are the giant animals (chicken, crab, bees), nor are there any women on the island. Verne considered his stories to be scientific fiction, as opposed to science fiction, and so an island of giant creatures is far from the kind of story he would write.

The main characters in this story are Cyrus Smith, who was a Union staff officer who was captured by the South, and he is also the scientist of the group. Next is Gideon Spilett, a reporter who was also captured and met Smith when both were prisoners of war. The next is Neb, who is described as "a Negro born of slave parents into the engineer's estate" who stayed with Smith after he was freed by him. He came to find Cyrus Smith, in Richmond when he learned Smith was a prisoner. The next man is Pencroft, a sailor who found himself trapped in Richmond because of the siege. The last is Harbert Brown, a fifteen year old boy who is an orphan that Pencroft takes care of as if he were his own son.

The novel is divided into three main sections. The first of these is titled "The Castaways from the Sky". It opens with the men desperately trying to keep their balloon aloft until they are able to reach land. Verne quickly fills the reader in on the history of these men, who have escaped from Richmond in a hot-air balloon, only to have been swept away in a storm which has taken them into the South Pacific. There they are fortunate to get near to an Island which they name Lincoln Island. The first section is devoted to them building a home on the island; there are a few unusual events, but nothing which can not be explained away. The section ends with the first undeniable evidence that someone else either is, or recently was on the island with them; a lead bullet.

The second section is titled "The Abandoned One". In this section they do a more thorough search and survey of Lincoln Island, and they find it is a very diverse island, which can provide for most all their needs. While searching their island, a group of apes take over their residence. Under unusual circumstances they are able to regain their home, and with it they gain an Ape servant (Jup). They build a small ship to investigate a nearby island when they find a note in a bottle. There they find a man (Ayrton) who has been abandoned there and become more animal than man. As with the first section, there are many unusual events which lead them to suspect they are not alone on the island. This section ends with the sighting of a ship.

The third section is titled "The Secret of the Island". In this section they deal with the pirates who appear to have come to make the island their own personal base. At the end, they do find their mysterious benefactor who has helped them throughout their time on the island. With the volcano nearing an eruption which threatens to destroy the island, they rush to build a ship in a last ditch effort to save themselves. When time runs out, they find their benefactor has reached out to them one last time.

I recommend this book to those who are interested in early science fiction or in the works of Jules Verne. However, I do expect that other people are likely to find the pacing rather slow. It is over 600 pages long, and the mysterious part of the tale builds slowly. In today's fast-paced action world, it could easily be viewed as slow and/or lacking in action.

All Translations Are Not The Same

This review is for ISBN 0819564753, publisher Wesleyan Univ Pr, translator Sidney Kravitz, hard cover.
I have read perhaps all Verne's novels. Very few are translated into English. Most translations of Mysterious Island (MI) can only be described as poor. There are versions that abridged 50% of the orininal 190,000 word text. One translator is rumored to have a profession in translating erotic novel.
I have been waiting years and years for a decent English version of MI, which is my favorite of Verne's works, and is regarded by quite a few as his best.
And here finally is Mr. Sidney Kravitz, who worked 14 years to produce by far the best English translation of MI. The result is a literary jewel, a text with its quaint beauty far beyond any other translations. Not to mention the complete illustrations from Jules Ferat, originally for the first French edition in 1875, that are absolutely unmatched by any later artists attempt. Interestingly, the publisher chose not to mention Ferat's name in the editorial review.
A novel costing [this much]? Is it worth it, you ask. Well, what you get is not a just novel, but a project, with Mr. Kravitz's passion, with many scholar's research work, with the beautiful illustrations not found in any other versions, and the elegance of classic science fiction. This is the book you will remember, one that you will re-read in 20 years, and one you will want your children to read.
The only comparible translation I know so far is Mr. Stump's (ISBN 0679642366, Modern Library, also with Ferat illustrations). I prefer Mr. Kravitz's. You can safely stay away from other versions.
If you are not familliar with but are interested in knowing the story line: a group of people escape Richmond during American Civil War in a baloon, and end up on an island, with virtually no belongings. They build a civilization. Many interesting engineering details are provided. You can find a more thorough introduction somewhere else.

Old-fashioned History at Its Best

This is an unashamedly old-fashioned political and military narrative history of the Roman Republic and Empire. There are no sections on daily life or the lives of women, for instance. There is some discussion of government, but that fits under politics. The military history is at the operational or strategic level, not at the tactical level. Battles are very briefly described, mainly just stating who the victor was. However, the book is not just a bare recital of "one thing after another"; the author also tries to get inside the head of the leading personalities to divine their intentions. Whatever the author discusses, it is so engagingly written that the story just carries the reader along. Several times I tried dipping into the book to just read a page or two but invariably found myself swept along until at least the end of the chapter. Highly recommended for those who like this approach to history.

Retired Man With Interest In History

I greatly appreciated Professor Mackay critical reveiew of the historical records, and his unbaised reconcilations of previous interpretations. However, a thousand years of history is a lot to cover in one book. My difculity is his coverage of the late empire. It is too short for me. I think that this could be a very interesting period to study in detail, when it seems, as professor Mackay suggests, the empire was essentally disintegrating. Perhaps Professor Mackay will apply his critical skills to a detalied analysis of the social and economic conditions of this period. On to the next book.

Extraordinarily fascinating and compelling reading

Knowledgeably written by Christopher S. Mackay, an accomplished associate professor of history who has published numerous articles on all periods of Roman history, Ancient Rome: A Military And Political History is a comprehensive political history ancient Rome from the city's origins during the Italian Iron Age to the deposition of its last emperor in A.D. 476. From Rome's growth and conquest to pressures and invasion that eventually destroyed its empire, to how it came to adopt Christianity as its state religion and the lasting influence of that legacy, Ancient Rome is extraordinarily fascinating and compelling reading. Written in terms as engaging to the lay reader as the professional historian, Ancient Rome is a dynasty-by-dynasty account that spreads out what history tells of feuds, assassinations, war, enforced peace, and military transformations in the legendary Roman Empire.

I read all three books in this series and what a wonderful test of true love, for family and for friends. A love that could last through any and all types of trials and tribulation. There were times that I thought that if it were me, I don't think, I would have been able to handle the situation the main characters of the story did - Nanzee, Basil, Blaise and Gwen and not to eliminate Cynthia. My hat's off to the writer, Edna Taylor, of this series and I will definitely be reading more of what she writes or has written.

The war against disease wages on!

Gail Jarrow has a remarkable ability to tell a compelling story, the fact that the story is true makes it all the more interesting. I really enjoyed her previous book, Red Madness, so I was really looking forward to reading this one. I loved this one as well. This book is everything that narrative nonfiction should be, a compelling story, interesting characters, and a challenging problem. Disease has long been a source of great suffering and difficulty and it still is throughout the world. Reading a story like this helps reveal the many who have helped fight the battle against disease, some by choice, and others like Mary Mellon, very unwillingly.

Mary's story is a sad one as she was as much a victim as those she infected, at least until she deliberately chose to ignore the warnings she received when she was released. She had the unfortunate honor of being the first healthy typhoid character identified in the United States. As such, public health officials weren't really sure what to do with her, so they locked her up. She wasn't treated particularly fairly considering the problem wasn't her fault. But her refusal to accept her status as a carrier made things even worse. The challenge of protecting the public's health versus individual rights is one that continues to be fought to this day.

This book is both a fascinating individual story but also a story of the fight against a disease and the people who waged that fight. I can recommend this book to those like myself who find such stories fascinating both the historical aspects as well as the science.

Entertaining writing on a historical disease! (Seriously)

Fatal Fever by Gail Jarrow

Typhoid can be fun.
Did you know that? Let me rephrase.
Reading about typhoid fever can be entertaining.
Better? Much.
Fatal Fever is all about the biology behind typhoid fever, the break down of how it spread, primary sources connecting us to the patients who succumbed to the illness, and a tracking of Typhoid Mary as she continued to unknowingly spread the disease through her work as a cook. As I read this book, I cringed. I chuckled. I gasped. I was even known to say, “I learned more about typhoid in 18 pages of this book than I have in all the other 33 years of my life combined.” Entertaining, straightforward, lots of visuals, and hard to put down. While the chapters are easily digestible, you won’t want to stop reading. I had no idea the depth of the typhoid epidemic and I certainly didn’t have any more than a passing empathy for those who suffered. Typhoid Mary was a name I knew but didn’t possess more than a cursory knowledge of. I highly recommend this book to anyone who:
1. is considering entering the medical or law enforcement professions,
2. is fascinated by historical accounts that are downright well written, or
3. likes to read about American history.
This book (and its predecessor about Scarlet Fever) will be making an entrance to my library this spring.

it reads like a novel

Summary: Everyone’s heard of Typhoid Mary, but who was she really? Uncovering her identity was a medical mystery that began in the summer of 1906. The detective is Dr. George Soper, a sanitation engineer who helped control a typhoid epidemic that swept through the town of Ithaca and Cornell University. When a wealthy family on Long Island was sickened with typhoid, they hired Soper to figure out what had caused the outbreak. He eventually tracked it to Mary Mellon, their former cook. Not only that, but he was able to trace several other outbreaks to her. The book chronicles her capture and confinement on an island off of Manhattan for most of the rest of her life. The reader will also learn about typhoid, its role in history, and how it has gradually been eliminated from most of the western world.

Pros: I had heard of typhoid and Typhoid Mary but knew nothing about it. I was appalled to learn of the lack of sanitation in the U.S. less than a century ago. And I had no idea that such celebrities as Abigail Adams, Wilbur Wright, and Stephen Douglas all died of typhoid. Although this book is nonfiction, it reads like a novel.

Cons: You may find yourself looking askance at your tap water. And you will surely nag your children more to wash their hands

About the Author
J Percy FitzPatrick (1862-1931) was born of Catholic Irish immigrant parents in King William’s Town. Married in 1889, he had five children growing up in Johannesburg. At Rudyard Kipling’s prompting he wrote out several drafts of his stories of his greenhorn youth of twenty years before under the title The Life, the Man and the Dog. He finalised the work and by 1906 he was able to sponsor the British artist Edmund Caldwell to gather material to illustrate the typescript of what became known as Jock of the Bushveld.

Cheap OCR copy of the original

I don't know how I missed this when ordering, I recall looking through the descriptions, etc. before ordering.

This is a copy of the original book, made by General Books ([...]) and in the front, where copyright information usually are, it says the following:

"We made this book exclusively for you using patented Print on Demand technology."

It goes on to tell you they scan the book, convert it to text using OCR, and that they omit all illustrations. It admits that there may be footnotes in the text, typos and other issues. All of that is true. The list of illustrations are blended in with the text, there are no chapters. Quotation marks and apostrophes are almost randomly inserted, making it hard to distinguish speech attributed to one of the characters and speech patterns. There are no chapters.

If you are a scholar, you can make excuses for this and spend time to decipher the book. If you are buying this book for a child wishing to read the story of "Jock of the Bushveld," then you should not buy this book, kids can't parse this book and it is a meaningless jumble of text. I believe that even an adult may find it hard to read this for enjoyment.

I enjoyed the description of the various wild animals and terrain

This is a story of a dog told by his owner in South Africa in the time when goods were transported by oxen and wagons. Jock's master is a transporter--oxen train operator- and they travel through the bushveld hunting to supplement their food along the route. I enjoyed the description of the various wild animals and terrain. Jock is a loyal companion and always ready to hunt and defend his master. The whole book is tinged with sadness for me because the narrator is talking about their experiences in the past tense. You know that Jock is no longer with us. Maybe because I have an older dog, I kept wondering if this will be the chapter where Jock gets killed. This book took me to a place and time I never even imagined. I don't regret that I spent my time reading it. It has a glossary for the many Dutch and African words sprinkled in the text. This book was one the 5 best books about dogs suggested by an article in the Wall Street Journal.

A good story!

Jock is a dog. He is the object of this story of South Africa which covers about ten years in the latter part of the 19th Century. It is an engaging tale which gives a feel for the times through the eyes of a teamster or transportation worker. It is loosely based on the adventures of its author Percy Fitzpatrick as he traveled ox team wagons throughout central South Africa or the Bushveld. Bushveld is an Afrikaner word which would be the South African equivalent of the Australian "Outback". Jock was the runt of the litter when Percy got him but he grew to become a formidable dog and loyal companion. It is good book to obtain a feel for attitudes and cultural norms of the day. There is an interesting Zulu character in the second half of the story. Since it is based on a true story it is not fanciful like the Quartemain stories. I liked the book and I would have given it five stars but I thought that the first chapter was weak in that it concentrated on the hardships of Percy and that Jock was a long time in being introduced into the story. It was written for children but can be appreciated by anyone who enjoys such tales.
