I'm sorry to differ

As a OneNote evangelist, I am pleased that One Note has finally merited a Dummy's guide, and I wish I could concur with the other positive reviews here. But after getting feedback from several people to whom I loaned or gave copies, I'm a little worried that this book may do more harm than good in gaining adherents for this underappreciated program. The Dummies books, given their purpose, tend to be somewhat light on detail, but they are usually clear, accurate, and helpful. This slim volume, which seems hastily written, is unusually uninformative, and also confusing. I will give several examples, which you can judge for yourself.
On p. 12, in the brief instructions for creating a new notebook, the author writes, in step two, "Choose the place where you want to store the new notebook. By default, you have Skydrive and Computer as places." That's it. No information as to what the differences are between those choices (and they are very different for using OneNote), or guidance as to which to choose. That is not instruction, it is just a description of what you can see for yourself on your computer screen.
Step three on the same topic says if you selected Computer in step two, all you have to do is type in a name for the notebook and "the notebook opens and you're done," but "if you chose another place, go to step four." Step four says "Click the Create Notebook button." Now, in fact, you need to click the Create Notebook button regardless of where you choose to store the notebook, including if you choose Computer.
The author repeatedly, but not consistently, refers to the Quick Access toolbar as the "Quick Launch bar," which is a feature that belongs to the Windows operating system, and has nothing to do with OneNote. In the index, there are listings for both Quick Access toolbar and Quick Launch bar, when all references should be to the Quick Access toolbar.
In his list of the seven default menu tabs on the Ribbon (p. 17), the author leaves out the History tab.
These are not isolated examples, and I hope the author and publisher will revise the book and make it better in a future edition. If you do buy this guide, and get frustrated, please don't give up on OneNote, which is a really useful program. It is relatively simple compared to Microsoft Word or Excel, and there are a variety of good tutorials, videos, and forums available online to help you learn how to use it.

Very Poor as an Explanation - Great as a Waste of Money!

Not really useful. I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 that is on Windows 8.1. OneNote came with the operating system. This book was really not any help at all.
Many features are mentioned but not illustrated or explained. The explanations that are offered are somewhat vague and assume that the reader has no need of a book explaining how to implement and use OneNote. OneNote has context menus that don't appear until they are relevant to the tasks at hand. The OneNote menus are very difficult to discover without some explanation.
I would not recommend this book unless you are an experienced OneNote user and don't really need an explanation of OneNote.
If you are just looking for an extra "For Dummies" book that you don't need this is a great way to get rid of some money.

I am a Dummy

I am a dummy and the book was terrible. I read the whole thing. It did not answer my most basic questions. For example, when I printed something to OneNote, everything went to the same notebook page. Can I select where the printout goes in the notebook? The author said nothing about that. After spending a long time on the internet searching, I found it is simply a matter of going to File, then Options...
I have also been trying to use the lasso tool in OneNote. It is a selection tool, but I couldn't figure out how use it. The only mention of the Lasso in the book says, "Lasso items with your cursor to convert them or move them as a group." Okay, I put a lasso around them, now what?? If I right-click the lasso disappears. HOW do you convert or move things with the lasso?
I think that the other people who wrote glowing reviews about this book were not, in fact, dummies. If you are a dummy like me, do not waste your money on this book.
