The Battle for Syria: International Rivalry in the New Middle East, by Christopher Phillips

An unprecedented analysis of the crucial but underexplored roles the United States and other nations have played in shaping Syria’s ongoing civil war

Most accounts of Syria’s brutal, long-lasting civil war focus on a domestic contest that began in 2011 and only later drew foreign nations into the escalating violence. Christopher Phillips argues instead that the international dimension was never secondary but that Syria’s warwas, from the very start, profoundly influenced by regional factors, particularly the vacuum created by a perceived decline of U.S. power in the Middle East. This precipitated a new regional order in which six external protagonists—the United States, Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Qatar—have violently competed for influence, with Syria a key battleground.

Drawing on a plethora of original interviews, Phillips constructs a new narrative of Syria’s war. Without absolving the brutal Bashar al-Assad regime, the author untangles the key external factors which explain the acceleration and endurance of the conflict, including the West’s strategy against ISIS. He concludes with some insights on Syria and the region's future.

Review
"Philips . . . argues in a lucid and readable manner with a good balance of facts and anecdotes, that while domestic triggers and the wider impact of the Arab Spring may have caused the crisis, it was maintained by 'external powers being unwilling to prioritise ending the conflict over their own wider geopolitical agendas.'"—James Denselow, New York Journal of Books (James Denselow New York Journal of Books)

“Provides genuinely valuable insight into the dynamics of a tragedy that will undoubtedly remain at the centre of the world’s attention for many years to come.”—Daniel Falkiner, LSE Review of Books (Daniel Falkiner LSE Review of Books 2017-01-17)

Valuable insight into the dynamics of a tragedy
By History Reader
When the first protests broke out in the southern town of Deraa in March 2011, Syria had a population of around 21 million. Since that time, some 500,000 of the country’s people have been killed, nearly two million have been injured, another five million have fled the country and more than six million have been internally displaced. The average life expectancy of a Syrian has dropped from 70 to 55 years. Christopher Phillips is therefore not exaggerating when he writes that the battle for Syria has given rise to ‘the greatest humanitarian catastrophe of the twenty-first century’.

In fact, Phillips’s refusal to engage in hyperbole is a distinguishing feature of his new book, The Battle for Syria: International Rivalry in the New Middle East. So too is his focus on the broader geopolitical puzzle in which the Syrian conflict is just one particularly brutal and bloody piece. As he rightly notes, reports about the crisis in Syria have tended to focus excessively on the internal dynamics of the war, and this is unfortunately more often a reflection of political bias than it is of sound analysis.

Although Phillips does not deny the agency of Assad and his various domestic opponents, he is at pains to make clear that from the very beginning of the conflict in Syria, external actors have been essential in guiding and facilitating the actions of both the regime and the opposition. His goal in this book is to show how the war’s character, scale and scope have all been greatly impacted by these foreign influences.

The Battle for Syria begins with an uncontroversial sketch of the geopolitical landscape in the Middle East as it stood on the eve of the Syrian crisis in 2011 – namely, as one in which waning United States influence had created the conditions for a power struggle between regional states, and in particular between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Phillips then gives a brief overview of the strategic outlook and interests of each of the six countries that would become the most important external players in the Syrian conflict (the US, Russia, Iran, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar), providing just enough detail to make the analysis convincing without his descriptions becoming cumbersome or distracting.

Chapters Two through Five explore the early months of the conflict, the key period during which the path to civil war was paved. The escalating violence of the Syrian regime over the spring and summer of 2011 quickly sapped the international community’s patience with Assad: former partners in Qatar and Turkey decided to abandon him, while leaders in the US and Europe began imposing sanctions. All of these decisions were taken on the assumption that Assad and his regime would quickly collapse under the combined pressure of domestic unrest and international isolation. According to Phillips, however, this rested on a serious underestimation of the resilience of the Syrian government, and it would come to have fateful consequences for US policy on intervention (or, in the early days, a lack thereof).

The next three chapters consider the reasons why the major external powers chose to back the various players they did and the important ways in which these decisions shaped the conflict. Most significant in this respect was the support given by anti-Assad regional powers to Islamic extremist groups in Syria. While Islamists had been present among the opposition from early on – Assad released many extremists from prison in an attempt to radicalise the protest movement and thus legitimise his crackdown – covert support from Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar for extremist elements helped to ensure that the insurgency took on an ever-more vicious and sectarian ideological hue. The supplementation of Assad’s exhausted military forces with Shiite militiamen from Lebanon, Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan has only fanned these flames.

The final three chapters of the book explore both actual and threatened direct intervention by foreign militaries. Phillips explores the controversy surrounding the Russian-brokered solution to Assad’s breach of President Obama’s ‘red line’ with an admirably even hand, drawing out the negative consequences of Obama’s reticence without ignoring the constraints the US President was facing. The subsequent discussion of the US-led intervention against Islamic State is sound, but it does not provide much original insight. Phillips compensates for this, however, with an incisive analysis of the ongoing Russian military intervention in Syria which has tipped the balance in favour of Assad without creating the conditions for his final military victory: the rebels and their foreign backers still remain committed to the fight. We are thus left with the rather unhappy conclusion that "until the various external actors involved either have their goals sufficiently satisfied or cut their losses and leave the stage, the war is likely to continue in some form."

Phillips writes that he does not intend The Battle for Syria to be a history of the Syrian civil war, but rather "a study in international relations, which utilises broader approaches from that discipline to to increase our understanding of the origins, expansion and continuation of Syria’s conflict." This characterisation is not entirely accurate: the content of the book is, in general, more descriptive than it is analytical or prescriptive. One unfortunate consequence of this is that we are not offered many insights into how the direction of the war could or should be changed. This lack of forward-looking analysis is especially regrettable in view of the potential for a US-Russia rapprochement in Syria under the incoming Trump administration. These points notwithstanding, Phillips does provide some genuinely valuable insight into the dynamics of a tragedy that will undoubtedly remain at the centre of the world’s attention for many years to come.

An ordinary descriptive book
By Qaisar Rashid, Dr
It is convincing enough to assume that there exists post-American Middle East which creates a kind of power (geo-political) vacuum to entice Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey into competing with the dwindling influence of the United States (US) in the Middle East; the battle for Syria is one such example where external forces are contending for dictating their terms. This is the central idea of the book.

In the post-Cold war era, Syria has been enjoying an interesting combination of dynasty and socialism, led by President Bashar al-Assad, who belongs to Shia Alawi minority tribe (12% of the population) ruling over the Sunni Arab majority (65%). After December 17, 2010, when Mohamed Bouazizi immolated himself in Tunisia and sparked the Arab Spring of awakening, Deraa was the first Syrian city where anti-Assad slogans were heard from teenagers in early March 2011. The latent period of two and a half months was enough to let the Syrian regime brace the challenge.

On page 48, Phillips writes: “[I]t is quite possible that Syrians would have remained largely passive were it not for the trigger of the Arab Spring, which served as both an inspiration and a guide…Technology helped facilitate protest…It took days and weeks for Syrians and the world to learn about the Hama massacre in [February] 1982 [to quell the revolt of the Muslim Brotherhood], but in 2011 technology [e.g. internet, satellite television, Smartphone, social media and al-Jazeera] allowed instant information.” Here, whereas Phillips says that the presence or absence of technology to spread information makes a difference between the reaction of people to incidents in 1982 and 2011, he does not mention the significance of the authenticity of information to be spread through technology. Ironically, Phillips does not value the role of Wikileaks for giving people access to the raw truth – and not disinformation – spread through the prevailing technology in Tunisia leading to the Arab Spring in 2011. In the bibliography section, only one reference about Wikileaks – and that is related to “Ankara’s new foreign policy” – is found on page 288. Perhaps, Phillips does not appreciate that, more than technology, the difference lies in the legitimacy of information being bandied about, and that the revelation of information through Wikileaks became the immediate reason for the making of the Arab Spring.

Phillips differentiates between uprising and civil war in Syria but considers 2011 an important year in both cases. From page 50 to 57, Phillips comments on uprising. He explicates two main pre-emptive modes of appeasement adopted by the Assad regime to keep Syrians in general away from toppling it through any uprising be it in the name of the Arab Spring, unlike Iraq, Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. The first mode is contingent on five buy-ins such as offering economic benefits to the Sunni merchant and middle class, extending patronage to important tribes, launching propaganda to depict Bashar al-Assad a reformer, avowing secularism of the regime to offer solace to secular Sunnis against Islamism and Jihadism and keeping Sunni-Alawi (Shia) tensions lower, and resorting to the appeal of stability be valued by the masses. The second mode is resorting to two coup-proofing strategies such as avoiding army’s defection by buying its loyalty and resorting to spying (or “Mukhabarat” which were 15 agencies by 2011) on the regime, general population and each other. Moreover, the Assad regime has protected itself not only by resorting to selective – and not wide-spread – violence against protestors through the security forces and Alawi pro-Assad non-state actors such as Shabiha but also by following a reconciliatory policy towards Kurds.

The Assad regime has come into the grip of two major limitations. First, the UNSC Resolution 1973 which, on March 17, 2011, gave mandate to NATO to “intervene to protect anti-regime demonstrators that Gaddafi had threatened to crush” deters Assad from using brute force against protestors – to avoid any international intervention, as mentioned on page 56. Secondly, the caution given to Syria by US President Barack Obama on August 20, 2012, not to cross the red line of using chemical weapons against rebels closes the option of suppressing rebels, as mentioned on page 175. Hence, whereas the measures taken by the Assad regime has enabled it to survive the uprising, the limitations imposed from outside have made it surrender Syria to a civil war.

On page 196, Phillips writes: “Seeing advantage when the Syrian uprising turned into a civil war [by December 2011] … It eventually acquired sufficient supporters and territory inside Syria to rename itself the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) in April 2013”. This paragraph shows that December 2011 was the time when Syria was descending into a civil war while the US forces were withdrawing from Iraq as per the 2008 electoral pledge made by US President Barack Obama. This is the point in time which Phillips considers to have given an impression of perceived decline of US power in the Middle East and which consequently shapes a new geopolitical order in the region. Here, Phillips forgets to mention the significance of the Status of Forces Agreement between Iraq and the US signed in 2008 and expired on December 31, 2011, and which the government of Iraq’s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki refused to extend owing to domestic political opposition. The extension could have afforded the US some leeway to station a residual (combat) force in Iraq to counter any immediate threat, as the US and NATO signed similar agreements with Afghanistan in December 2014 for another ten years.

If the Eisenhower doctrine (January 05, 1957) and the Carter doctrine (January 23, 1980) were any guide, the assumption of post-American Middle East would be a fallacy. Similarly, if the Clinton doctrine (February 26, 1999) were any guide, US planes would soon be hitting targets in the troubled spots in Syria. Neither is there any dwindling of US influence in the Middle East nor is there any new Middle East in the making. Nevertheless, the Afghanistan model can still be created in Syria by persuading the Assad regime to introduce reforms to make the government as representative as possible to let pro-democratic Syrians back the democratic process. The Syrian rebels of all hues can be treated as the Taliban and al-Qaeda are dealt with in Afghanistan.

Important addition to knowledge on the Syrian War
By Michael Stephens
Philips has produced a thorough analysis of the constituent parties that have swirled around the Syrian conflict since the outbreak of the first protests began almost six long years ago. This ranks as the first book of its kind which attempts to unlock the impact of regional and international actors and their varying interests in Syria, and it is done with a great deal of skill. While seeking to draw out the impact of external actors on the Syrian quagmire, it is clear that Philips (who worked as a teacher in Syria) has a good grasp of the inner dynamics of the country, and resists the simplistic tropes that too often govern analysis of Syria's complex social make up. The important point to note is that Phillips' account does not remove agency from the Syrians themselves, but seeks to place it within a set of wider constraints, and provides a fuller context. External actors appear to have the power to escalate the conflict, but when it comes to de-escalation their influence is significantly weaker.

The book is particularly strong in the years 2012-2014, and does much to explain how the competing interests of the Gulf States and Turkey, clashed diametrically with those of the Islamic Republic of Iran, leading to a long drawn out protracted war of interests in which numerous opportunities were lost to de-escalate the conflict. Turkey comes across as the one actor that has really paid a price for its intervention in Syria, this in contrast to Russia, Saudi, Iran and the US, who have yet to feel the true impact of the Syrian civil war on their domestic economies, and/or politics. It is this lack of pain which Philips argues leads external actors to maintain their investment in the Syrian war, because their is no downside to retreat at this point in time, indeed to withdraw support for one side would be seen as a humiliating defeat, and whilever this dynamic lasts the war is sure to continue.

Given the recent fall of Aleppo the book will need a fairly rapid update to account for all the changes that are sure to come in 2017, as Assad moves on the offensive against the rebels. But this does not detract from the central thesis of the book which is strongly and consistently argued. It is refreshing to have a non-biased account of Syria, from an author who clearly cares for the Syria's people and has much to say about each external actor involved in the conflict, most of it quite critical.

This book should be considered important reading for scholars, policy wonks, and generally interested readers alike. It is well researched and sourced, but written in an easy and lucid style which allows for quick reading.

A Practical Guide for Ordinary Heroes Who are the really effective leaders, nowadays? What does it take to lead this way? And how do they do it? Living Leadership is the first leadership book for people, like you, who have to deliver results working with the reality of the challenges in your business, the people in your team and the personality that you bring to work. An insightful and practical lesson in how real leaders behave, day by day, this book delivers a new way of seeing leadership, and new ways of living it. Built on a unique four-year experiment working alongside real leaders in real businesses, Living Leadership explodes the myth of the charismatic, transformational leader, to show that real progress comes from the dramatically ordinary stuff of leadership. From building relationships - not starting revolutions, by working with the grain of your organisation - not against it, and in knowing your limitations as much as pushing every boundary. Living Leadership will help you to discover within yourself the means to make real connections with people and make things happen in the real world. "Practical, challenging, potentially liberating and timely. Most of all, it is humane and passionate. It deserves attention. " "People Management" "Leaders are only effective when they work with and not apart from their organizations, as this important book makes plain. Anyone who has to run or lead anything should find space for it on their bookshelves." "Accounting & Business" "...a refreshing and engaging break from the torrent of formulaic, sanctimonious self-help guides ...peppered with incisive observations on redefining leadership in terms of the realities and choices that 'ordinary mortals' in organisations face ...there are some excellent practical lessons of good leadership, which will be helpful to managers and executives looking for long-term effectiveness" "Management Today" "Living Leadership shows how, when you take away the myths and misconceptions, leading can genuinely be made easier." Review
"A sound, readable, leadership book for a wide audience: to be read by everyone concerned with delivering resluts at any level." "Long Range Planning, March 2007" The real value of this book lies in the detail of how things really get done, and sometimes go wrong. The "black box" of leadership in organisations is now a little less mysterious Those of us who are led by someone will know that the book's messages are spot-on. It is practical, challenging, potentially liberating and timely. Most of all, it is humane and passionate. It deserves attention. People Management, February 2005 The authors of this timely and reassuring new book are challenging the conventional new wisdom. They bring a large and welcome dose of reality to the overblown debate on "transformational leaders" and the heroics of one lonely individual. Leaders are only effective when they work with and not apart from their organizations, as this important book makes plain. Anyone who has to run or lead anything should find space for it on their bookshelves." "Accounting & Business, February 2005" "... a refreshing and engaging break from the torrent of formulaic, sanctimonious self-help guides ... peppered with incisive observations on redefining leadership in terms of the realities and choices that 'ordinary mortals' in organisations face ... there are some excellent practical lessons of good leadership, which will be helpful to managers and executives looking for long-term effectiveness" "Management Today, February 2005" Based on some four years of action research, Binney, Wilke and Williams provide us with an unvarnished account of leadership in action, with all its anxiety, uncertainty, false certainty and crippling expectation. They dispel the myths of leadership, they eschew recipes and homilies; instead they give us some real insight and wisdom into the constraints and possibilities of living leadership' . Bill Critchley, Organisation Consultant and Leader of the Ashridge Masters in Organisation Consulting " "Living Leadership struck a real cord with me. In the quiet of sleepless nights it's precisely the type of themes explored in this book that have aided my success. Great leadership is not about slick presentation. It's about embracing a continual leadership responsibility as second nature in every interaction. Ultimately it's the ability to connect to people in a "real time real world" way. Trevor Bish-Jones, Chief Executive, Woolworths Group plc " "Living Leadership shows how, when you take away the myths and misconceptions, leading can genuinely be made easier." Hans Straberg, CEO, Electrolux A 'how to' book that redefines leadership in terms of the realities and choices facing people in organisations today." Professor Michael Osbaldeston, Director of CranfieldSchoolof Management

Easy to understand Latin for a beginner.
By Connie King
Excellent explanatory guide to each faucet of Latin grammar. will take me some time to actually assimilate the accents and meanings of the words. Gave easy to understand charts of how to sound out words similar to the English sounds. Was quite surprised many Latin words were familiar in the English language. Well written book. "I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review."

Excellent and complete summary of Latin learning.
By Juan Manuel Cuartas Bernal
The book is a complete summary for this language. There is some strange behaviour of the tables for vocabulary on my Kindle Fire, but in general, the book is complete and it is a good guide to learn Latin. Also can be used to learn some languages derived from Latin. It worths a read of the book, especially if you are learning any European language. I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book, through Reading Deals, so I could give an honest review.

So happy to have this on my tablet!
By Jan
It's been a looong time since I took a brick and mortar Latin course, so I was a little lost in all of the grammatics. That being said, I am very fluent in medical Latin, but wanted a leg up in heraldic usage as well as things like bases of romance language words and fooling around in some of the urban fantasy stuff (some authors get their giggle on by using latin words in spell working that are really funny if you know their meaning, not threatening or harmful).
I cannot testify as to whether the format is useful to others, but (except for the declensions), I found it very well suited to my needs. I am very happy to have this on my tablet for quick reference.
I won this eBook in Member Giveaway on LibraryThing.com in an exchange for an honest review.

Agartha, by Mariana Stjerna

In Medieval times, people believed the Earth was flat and that the sun rotated around it. The Catholic Church considered it heresy to suggest that the Earth was round and orbited the sun. The astronomer, Copernicus, was aware of this, and did not dare publish his findings until on his death-bed in 1543.

The next major "disclosure" is revealed in this book. The Earth is hollow and populated by an advanced race, who is planning to come to the aid of people on the surface very soon. Will this concept be accepted by scientists and the religious community? Is this science-fiction, fantasy, or liberation? We can only advise you to read this book, written as a novel, and examine your own heart.

There are those who have already visited Agartha, the world inside the planet, and found society there advanced and flourishing. Admiral Richard E. Byrd, USA (1947) is one of them. He was not given to flights of fancy.

Mariana Stjerna made contact with Timothy Brooke, a Canadian, who appeared to her briefly and then "dictated" this book. He was saved by Agarthans from a shipwreck off the coast of Canada in the mid-20th century, and is now alive and well in Agartha. In this book, he recounts his story and describes life in this five-dimensional paradise.

Agartha For Dummies
By Daniel Williams
I have read many books on the Hollow Earth subject but what makes this one so good is it's refreshing perspective. Written in a short story format, it doesn't try to oversell the concept or prove anything. The matter of fact, easy going style lends itself to an enjoyable read that concentrates more on the social and spiritual side of living inside the Earth than it does on the physical aspects.

Sure it gives you some history and facts interwoven into the story but has been dummied down for the simplistic learning levels and the lack of ability of the our civilization to think outside the box.

Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and Everything in Between), by Lauren Graham

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this collection of personal essays, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood reveals stories about life, love, and working as a woman in Hollywood—along with behind-the-scenes dispatches from the set of the new Gilmore Girls, where she plays the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore once again.

In Talking as Fast as I Can, Lauren Graham hits pause for a moment and looks back on her life, sharing laugh-out-loud stories about growing up, starting out as an actress, and, years later, sitting in her trailer on the Parenthood set and asking herself, “Did you, um, make it?” She opens up about the challenges of being single in Hollywood (“Strangers were worried about me; that’s how long I was single!”), the time she was asked to audition her butt for a role, and her experience being a judge on Project Runway (“It’s like I had a fashion-induced blackout”).

In “What It Was Like, Part One,” Graham sits down for an epic Gilmore Girls marathon and reflects on being cast as the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore. The essay “What It Was Like, Part Two” reveals how it felt to pick up the role again nine years later, and what doing so has meant to her.

Some more things you will learn about Lauren: She once tried to go vegan just to bond with Ellen DeGeneres, she’s aware that meeting guys at awards shows has its pitfalls (“If you’re meeting someone for the first time after three hours of hair, makeup, and styling, you’ve already set the bar too high”), and she’s a card-carrying REI shopper (“My bungee cords now earn points!”).

Including photos and excerpts from the diary Graham kept during the filming of the recent Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, this book is like a cozy night in, catching up with your best friend, laughing and swapping stories, and—of course—talking as fast as you can.

I smell snow...
By Emily
I wasn't originally going to review this book. The reasons being, to quote Chandler Bing, "are threefold": a. I love, love, love Lauren Graham; b. the book has some weird tangents that I can't in good conscience avoid mentioning c. I would never be able to bring myself to publicly critique this woman, who is an absolute genius, if I had truly negative things to say about the book (after all, I could never compromise my "reviewer's integrity").

Talking as Fast as I Can starts off extremely strongly, particularly if you listen to the audio (which highlights her acting abilities, including her singing...an added treat). The story begins as a memoir, discussing her upbringing and her jaunt into the wonderful world of acting. So far, so good. Lauren is self-deprecatingly hilarious and an extremely talented all-around artist, which includes a strong aptitude for writing. (Say what you will about the subject matter of the book, but Graham can write). Through the first section, about her early days as an actress in graduate school and then in a theater troupe, I was pleasantly engaged, with two thumbs up.

At that point, one of my thumbs started to waiver. The book, admittedly, takes some unexpected turns in the content department as it teeters between advice column, anecdotal essays, and personal stories, mostly out of chronological order. While it's fine to jump around in time - and it's fine to have a mixture of styles - the combination of styles and time periods is somewhat chaotic here. While I found the writing interesting and fun to hear, I was leaning towards not reviewing the book at this point... lest I not be able to give my girl, Lorelai, five well-earned stars.

Where Lauren starts to draw me back in is around the section that she discusses the importance of women lifting each other up and goes into a tale that focuses on giving advice to a younger generation. I will admit that, again, I wished I was reading more of a memoir, but her authenticity in this portion of the book is palpable. Lauren was twice a guest in the final season of "The Rosie O'Donnell Show," and she struck me then, in 2002 - as she did Rosie and later Ellen - as a true, down-to-earth, funny, kick-butt kind of gal (or something that sounds cooler than that but equally awesome). From those days forward (though I didn't get into Gilmore Girls and obviously Parenthood until much later), I knew I was a fan of Graham. Towards the back-half of the book, I started to recall that feeling: that she was my pal, decoupaging in the craft corner with Rosie.

When I knew, definitively, that I could give this book five stars (and mean it) is in the final section when Lauren discusses the Gilmore Girls revival. She is such a "real" person, and her account is so personal and touching. For fans of the show, this section alone makes Talking as Fast as I Can a must-have. Lauren is gracious and humble with an unbelievable work ethic and a positive attitude. Her stories might be slightly disjointed, but they're uplifting; they're positive; they're the kinds of life affirmations that so many of us need right now. Lauren is confident, self-aware, and legitimately nice... with a large dose of humor thrown in... and she's exactly the kind of role model - a person focused on the work before the glitz, glamour, fame, or fortune - that we should all be looking to for advice in today's world... a world filled with reality shows and Caviar dreams.

Sure, maybe her book is a little quirky. I like quirky. Quirky is a good thing.

So thank you Lauren for giving us a slice of your life and for pouring your heart into your characters that have touched so many of us over so many years. Thank you for being appreciative of your audience and for offering us guidance, taking us under your wing through this writing in a way that only you can.

Copperboom.

Love, love
By Katrina Michelle De Vries
Love, love, love this!!! From the moment I started reading I am laughing out loud. I adore the fact that Lauren writes the way that she comes across in interviews. Someone who is funny, sharp and willing to make fun of herself. I loved the analysis of the golf ball that fell out of her car and the way that she tries to protect her personal life. Or the character that she develops to hide her old lady tendencies. Lauren Graham is an amazing writer and she is now on my list of people I would love to share a coffee and lunch with.

Like the soft voice of a friend over a casual ...
By Lisa M. Gott
It took me far too many years to get on the Gilmore Girls train, but once I finally did, boy did I become an instant fan for life. As such, I was extremely excited to read Lauren Graham’s new memoir, Talking as Fast as I can.

There are so many (wonderful) things I want to say about her book that it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly where to begin. Graham’s prose has an effortless, familiar feel to it. Like the soft voice of a friend over a casual cup of coffee. It’s obvious she’s a writer, and an extremely talented one at that.

One of the things I was worried about before I started reading was that it might only focus on her life as it related to Gilmore Girls. While that would have still been a thoroughly enjoyable read, fans (at least fans like me) read memoirs to learn about the real person and their real life. In learning about their lives, we feel as though we’ve left the world of fandom and entered the world of friendship. And Graham’s memoir delivers a perfect blend of personal and professional to us.

Talking as Fast as I can contains two large chapters where Graham recaps the actual filming experience of Gilmore Girls. The first, positioned near the beginning of the book, covers the original series, and the last, positioned near the end of the book, covers the revival. The remainder of the book follows Graham throughout her life from childhood to present. We learn a little about her family, about her upbringing and education, and, of course, about how she became the actress we love today. She’s witty, inspirational, and utterly entertaining.

But it’s more than just a simple sharing of random moments of her life. You can tell that each story, each chapter, each word has been chosen with care and caution. It’s neither too short nor too long; it is just perfect. As her agent had once told her after reviewing her first novel, there are some publishers who will buy and sell anything (whether it’s good or not) a celebrity writes just because they know it will sell. She refers to those kinds of books as “Monkey Doodles.” I can assure you this book is anything but a Monkey Doodle. This is a wonderful book. An eloquently written book. One every fan should read.

I came away from the book an even bigger fan. I’ve actually just started binging Parenthood and oh my… what a fantastic show. And I plan on reading her debut work of fiction, Someday, Someday, Maybe, as well as pretty much everything else she writes. Lauren is a warm and engaging woman who hasn’t let her success go to her head. And I’m very excited to see where her career and talents take her next.

If you’re a fan of Gilmore Girls or of Lauren herself, and even if you’re not, take a few hours a get to know this talented and wonderful human being. If you weren’t a fan of hers at the outset, you will be in the end.

By Satyajit Malugu
This book is a must if you are starting out with mobile testing in 2015. Author has done a lot of research for you. Start here and go for the rest.

This book is also recommended for advanced testers to validate and expand your current knowledge. My efforts to find something lacking were vain, he covered every aspect of current mobile testing world including staged Android releases that I learned a week back.

This book guides you to understand characteristics of mobile testing and to know handy tools
By Sangsoo Nam
"Mobile testing? Well... It's just a smaller device. right?". If you think like this, you probably don't understand a mobile device and a mobile testing. As you know, the mobile industry is really rapidly growing. Lots of companies release their application. If an application has a bad quality including a crash, users might choose alternative application instead of the application.

How to get the high quality? To get that, it is important to understand characteristics of mobile testing. Then, you need to know handy tools to help your process. This book guides you well about those. I was one of them who loves the test automation, but the book reminded me an important point with following sentences.

"Don't try to automate everything. Define test automation goals depending on your app and start automating those goals."

In short, I recommend this book for everyone who involved in the mobile application quality.
