A clean and clear text with pleasant introduction

This comment is about the capstone 2010 edition of Wealth of Nations. I looked at several editions of the Wealth of Nations at the brick and mortar bookstore and text of this book is very nice. The book is a pleasure to hold, and delightful to read; I think it is in relaxing and forthright Arial font. Whatever the font, it is not some ancient-looking typeface like some editions offer.
As for some other commenter's complaint about this text being gutted by "liberal" Bowdon, I apparently lack the sophistication to judge this travesty as I think it's fine. You are welcome to get the original text for $0.99 for your Kindle if you are really that freaked out by a very slightly "modernized" text. I, however; think it is worth your money to buy the paper edition.

How and Why The Wealth of Nations is "one of the most important and influential books ever written."

The title of this review is from the Foreword to this volume, written by Eamonn Butler (Director of the Adam Smith Institute), and continues as follows: The Wealth of Nations "transformed how we think about the nature of economic life, turning it from an ancient to a recognizably modern form." Razeen Sally is Senior Lecturer in International Political Economy at London School of Economics and Co-Director of Eureopean Centre for Political Economy (ECIPE). In the Preface, he observes, " The governing principles of the Smithian economic system is 'natural liberty' (or non-intervention), which allows 'every man to pursue his own interest his own way, upon the liberal plan of equality, liberty and justice.' And as Smith goes on to say, 'All systems of preference or restraint, therefore, being thus completely taken away, the obvious and simple system natural liberty establishes itself of its own accord.'"

Those who have read one or more of the volumes that comprise Tom Butler-Bowdon's "50 Classics" series already know that he possesses superior reasoning and writing skills as well as a relentless curiosity when conducting research on history's greatest thinkers and their major works. For these and other reasons, I cannot think of another person better qualified to provide the introductions to the volumes that comprise a new series, "Capstone Classics."

Unlike so many others, he provides more, much more than a flimsy "briefing" to the given work. In his 32-page Introduction to this edition of The Wealth of Nations, Butler-Bowdon discusses subjects and issues such as these in order to create a context, a frame-of-reference, for Smith's insights:

o Adam Smith and the world in which he lived
o The Wealth of Nations (TWON): Its origins and influences
o The major political and economic issues that it addresses
o The meaning and significance of two terms, "wealth" and "nations," in the book's title
o Contemporary works with which it was compared and contrasted
o Adam Smith's views on social relations
o How a strong market "works"
o Why specialization is "the key to prosperity"
o Smith's views on enlightened self-interest as opposed to society's best interests
o The crucial role of capital
o How and why SMith differentiates (in TWON) a nation's productivity and its system of currency
o The respective roles of price and demand in a market economy
o TWON's "agrarian bias"
o Smith's views on government's proper role
o Correlations between personal wealth and natural wealth
o Smith's views on human rights

There are dozens of others, of course, but hopefully these will provide at least some indication of the scope of Butler-Nowdon's coverage in the 32-page Introduction. As indicated earlier, is to create a context, a frame-of-reference, for Adam Smith's insights. He does so brilliantly and also in each of the other volumes in the "Capstone Classics" series that have been published thus far.

Awesome read

Can't go wrong with Adam Smith! Would have liked the complete book but this copy is awesome. The book it's self is of very high quality, the pages are some if the best I have ever seen. Only complaint is the dust cover is only half the height of the book.

And for those readers who are unfamiliar with the name of this photographic artist, 'Giovanni' is a nom de plume for a famous fashion photographer in Italy, a man who wishes to remain anonymous to his primary career of classy Italian fashion.

Though these are isolated images, what makes them important is not only the fine quality of the photography and the first class design, but also the frank courage to focus on that part of the anatomy the world has such difficulty dealing with historically and at present - the male phallus. Just as some famous artists have elected to repeatedly paint haystacks, or a single cathedral form multiple angles and seasons of the year, or pond after pond of water lilies, Giovanni explores the organ of origin in settings and manners that keep the topic fresh and interesting. Alternating between black and white and color and sepia tones he presents models in partial clothing and without clothing, in aqueous atmospheres and in obvious studio environmental poses, Giovanni manages to remain one of the best. About the Author
Dr. Joanne Cacciatore�has a fourfold relationship�with bereavement. She is herself�a bereaved mother: her newborn daughter�died on July 27, 1994, and that single tragic�moment catapulted her unwillingly onto the�reluctant path of traumatic grief. For more�than two decades, she’s devoted herself to�direct practice with grief, helping traumatically bereaved people on�six continents. She’s also been researching and writing about grief�for more than a decade in her role as associate professor at Arizona�State University and director of the Graduate Certificate in Trauma�and Bereavement program there. And, in addition, she’s the founder�of an international nongovernmental organization, the MISS Foundation�dedicated to providing multiple forms of support to families�experiencing the death of a child at any age and from any cause, and�since 1996 has directed the foundation’s family services and clinical�education programs.

Cacciatore is an ordained Zen priest, affiliated with Zen Garland�and its child bereavement center outside of New York City. She is in�the process of building the a “care-farm” and respite center for the�traumatically bereaved, just outside Sedona, Arizona. The care-farm�will offer a therapeutic community that focuses on reconnecting with�self, others, and nature in the aftermath of loss through gardening,�meditation, yoga, group work, animals, and other nonmedicalized�approaches. All the animals at the care-farm will have been rescued�from abuse and neglect.

She is an acclaimed public speaker and provides expert consulting�and witness services in the area of traumatic loss. Her research has�been published in peer-reviewed�journals such as�The Lancet,�Social Work and Healthcare, and�Death Studies, among others.

She received her PhD from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln�and her master’s and bachelor’s degrees in psychology from Arizona�State University. Her work has been featured in major media sources�such as�People�and�Newsweek�magazines, the�New York Times, the�Boston Globe, CNN, National Public Radio, and the�Los Angeles Times.�She has been the recipient of many regional and national awards for�her empathic work and service to people suffering traumatic grief.

She travels quite often but spends most of her time in Sedona,�Arizona, with her family and three rescue dogs. She also has three�horses that are part of her�Rescue Horses Rescue People�equine therapy�program.

Dr. Jeffrey Rubin�is among the leading authorities on the integration of meditation and psychotherapy. He’s the�author of�Practicing Meditative Psychotherapy�and�The Art of Flourishing. He lives in New York.

Arthur Byne's Diplomatic Legacy

I have used Arthur Byne's many books as a reference for many years. He was the most influential architectural historian in regard to Spanish architecture, particularly as to identifying the importance of Spanish Renaissance architecture and form--something few, if any other historian considered as a singular example of a style and not simply a copy of Italian Renaissance. This book takes his significance further through going behind the scenes to explain what led to his research in his own very interesting life. Not many people remember his influence with Julia Morgan and how San Simeon came to be. I would recommend this book to anyone interested Spanish architecture, Julia Morgan, San Simeon or William Randolph Hearst, the owner and builder of the Hearst Castle in California--San Simeon.

Finally, a biography on Arthur Byne

Being a history and architecture buff, I wanted to learn more about the influence of Spanish architecture in the United States. Much is written by Arthur Byne and Mildred Stapley. It was only natural to want to learn more about their lives and how an American could know so much about the architecture of Spain. The influence of what is brought over by people like Arthur Byne is clearly seen in architecture all over the US. I enjoyed the photographs and drawings that illustrate Spanish design summarized in his first four books.

Excellent portrait of a man who was very important in the Spanish antique collecting of William Randolph Hearst

A well researched, well written look at a very complex figure. This also shows a recent point in Spanish history and Byne's involvement and influence on several different levels. William Randolph Hearst, an American media mogul until his death in 1951 at age 88, was an art and antique collecting client of Byne. It's an enjoyable read with great information about some of the "high rollers" of the time.

Another Gem from Mr. Fletcher

As a long time reader of Ralph Fletcher's work, I was eager to get my hands on this resource as soon as he mentioned it to me during a school visit earlier this year. On the day the book arrived, I tore open the box, sat down, and gobbled up the wealth of opportunity offered by this work. In addition to the mentor pieces being relevant, interesting, and thought-provoking for my students, Mr. Fletcher has offered a peek inside the writer's brain for how each was crafted. Without over doing the explanation, he simply offers a "nugget" for the students to notice and think about. Already this school year, my fifth graders are talking more about initiating, structuring, and crafting writing than I have ever experienced before.
Don't pass over "By Way of Introducing Myself." This introductory section speaks openly and honestly to students about the purpose behind these mentor pieces and puts the power of learning in their hands.
If you believe in nurturing young writers by sharing great mentor pieces, discussing what they notice, and allowing them to have a go at some new understanding, then don't pass this resource by. Pick it up, you will not be disappointed!

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!

As I travel all over the United States working with K-12 writing teachers, I always use mentor texts (frequently those written by Ralph Fletcher). We know, mentor texts are the ultimate way to teach and model what strong writing looks and sounds like. Mr. Fletcher has provided us with the best tool ever! In his newest creation, Fletcher gives us short pieces of writing which model for our students (and us) the different crafts to emulate in our own writing. This book's simplicity is ingenious and I wish I had thought of it. He has provided a sample of mulitple genres and skills. Mentor Author, Mentor Texts will make you and your students want to pick up a pencil and WRITE. Cudos to you Mr. Fletcher. Well done!

Ralph Fletcher has done it again. He has written a great resource for teachers and students alike. His "gentle" approach to using microtexts to introduce literacy strategies is refreshing. His insights regarding the power students feel when they discover elements of author's craft on their own was affirming to me as I work with students and their teachers.
With each piece of his own writing in the book, Ralph shares just enough of the thinking process of the writer to challenge students to dig deeper on their own
for elements of craft. The book is a treasure. I highly recommend it.
