an excellent overview of photosynthesis

as a graduate student with a background in physical chemistry and now working in biophysical chemistry, i found this book to be an excellent overview of photosynthesis. blankenship clearly outlines broad topics to be covered in the first chapter then delves into well-organized detail in subsequent chapters. this book was recommended as a reference by my advisor, but i found it so well written that i read nearly the entire book and bought a copy for my own. i'd recommend this book to anyone intersted in photosynthestic mechanisms at the molecular level (including light harvesting, water oxidation, protein structures, and carbon fixation).

Great Book.

Very well written. It has an impressive historic review of photosynthesis. The last chapter on photosynthesis evolution is also very good. I needed to understand the mechanism of light harvesting and the function of antenna and I got the information from this book in a very concise and readable format. It is a must-have book for anybody working on photosynthesis.

The Physics of Photosynthesis

This text presents a physics approach to the understanding of the process of photosynthesis. The basic approach is to view the chlorophyll molecule, with its many different versions, as an antenna. The author is not shy in his use of mathematical equations, even differentials and integrals, but not so much to scare away those biologists not so comfortable with them. An excellent appendix provides readers with background material in the basic physics concepts, including quantum mechanics. Through it all, the author's voice comes through loud and clear, as if he were speaking to you directly. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on the evolution of photosynthesis.

In depth and easy

When looking for an error (that has value) you must be able to determine what kind of error it is in the first place. I just started accumulating what was being sold at auction on E bay that claimed were errors or varieties. Take doubling, as in "Doubled Dies" not Double Dies which indicates a lack of understanding. Until I read the sample of this book, I purchased Two coins that were what is known as "Mechanical Doubling" not collectible, unless just to compare. Had they been of high value, I'd be stuck with coins that were not what they appeared to be and worthless. Fortunately they were not the popular types with high prices. This book shows you with photos where to look, what to look for, the value at the time of printing which helps to understand how coins values increase and decrease according to the market and supply and demand. Overall this is a book that before you start buying coins that bare the attribution of error or variety you should own.
I am a man who doesn't always read instructions being in my late forties and having put many things together successfully. That being the case, this book put me back to looking before leaping mode. And has paid for itself and more.

You really can "strike it rich with pocket change" if you read and follow the advice of this book

This is my second purchase of this book ( I bought the previous version). It is so essential for the relative newcomer to the study and enjoyment of coin collecting that I recommend this book as a "first purchase" for all of my numismatic students.
The neat thing about this book is it provides a wealth (no pun intended) of information and only deals with circulating coinage. One of the first coins that I found was a 2004-D Roosevelt dime with a doubled ear. I saw the coin, realized that it was different, and when I looked it up in this book, there it was!

Reluctant on purchasing this simply because of its' title.

On the title... FYI, coin hunting is hard work and getting rich off of it would be like hitting the lottery. Possible, yes, highly unlikely though. But, this is a great hobby, one which the whole family can enjoy together. It takes hard work with long eye straining hours to find a nice several-dollar worth coin. That being said this book has a wealth of great information including tons of great black-and-white close-up photos and details on how to tell the difference from one coin which is a low-value 'error' coin and one which is TRULY collectable! I have found several very nice finds directly because of this book. I highly recommend this to everyone interested in coin collecting whether you are a long-time collector or someone just starting out. If you are new, get two good magnifying eye loops, a 10x and 14x, this will really help in your coin-error hunting. I am extremely happy I made this purchase!

4 and � stars! A Classic Regency That Still Appeals and a Plot to Entertain!

First published in 1978, six years after Kathleen Woodiwiss’ classic bodice ripper THE FLAME AND THE FLOWER, this Regency romance presented quite a change. It’s lighthearted banter, short length (at 217 pages), and no more than kisses for its love scenes might seem incongruous with the romances being written then. But it just shows you how varied the historical romance genre was and is.

I loved this story and it kept me up reading late into the night wanting to see how it would end. Set in England in 1817-18, it’s the story of Orelia Stanyon, the niece of a country earl deeply committed to improving the life of the poor, who dies as the story begins leaving Orelia and her cousin Caroline in need of funds. But Caroline, though in love with a young lord who went abroad to make his fortune, has managed to become engaged to Darius, the handsome, wealthy and “wicked” Marquis of Ryde. Caroline does not love him but sees it as a good move for her future security. Until Caroline and Orelia move into the marquis’ home to await the wedding, Orelia does not realize that the marquis is the same gentleman who stole a kiss from her outside the George and Dragon Inn.

Darius has never forgotten that kiss he gave to the young woman he thought a mere country lass. And he is shocked when she appears in his home as his betrothed’s cousin. Orelia with her heart of gold is determined to see her cousin happy and the social ills of London addressed. By the terms of Caroline’s father’s will, she was made Orelia’s guardian, and Orelia was to be Caroline’s conscience. As the wedding approaches, Caroline plays fast and loose with her amours and Orelia has a job keeping up, all the while she is beginning to realize her true feelings for the marquis.

The most striking thing about this story was the fast-paced dialog and the intriguing twists in the plot. Cartland’s writing style sometimes drops into the omniscient, narrator voice but I quickly got used to it. She shows you what all the characters are thinking in her own way and it’s quite charming. While the story is not deeply emotional, it has enough action (including a wretched villain who wants Orelia for his own), and enough angst to keep you on the edge of your reading seat. You will enjoy this one, I promise. I recommend it!

Fr. Pacwa has done all the work for us!

I have wanted to pull all this together for a long time...now all the work is done. For Catholics who don't have a full understanding of what Eucharist is, and non- catholics who have been told that we made all this stuff up and are non"bible-believers" this sheds new and great light on the center of our belief....Christianity is a Eucharistic faith! Find it in the Bible! thank you Fr. Pacwa!

Another great Bible study by Fr. Pacwa

Most people probably know Fr. Pacwa from one of his numerous shows on EWTN. However, he is also the author of several other Bible study books including one on The Year of Faith and another on St. Paul. In "The Eucharist," Fr. Pacwa helps us understand the true meaning of this Blessed Sacrament. We first start by seeing how it compares to the Old Testament sacrifice and then move on to the actual words of sacrifice used in both the New Testament and the Mass.

This book also discusses the parallels between the Eucharist and Passover while also explaining Christ's priesthood. The most fascinating part to me, though, was the section devoted to Jesus' words, "Eat my Body and Drink my Blood." This Biblical passage is definitely a stumbling block for many today and was in Jesus' day as well. I definitely believe that the Eucharist becomes the actual Body and Blood of Jesus, but this section helped me appreciate the Scriptural evidence of it even more.

I love Fr. Pacwa's Bible studies. They are straightforward and, unlike other studies, all you need is his book and a Bible. Divided into six sections, one could easily complete this study in a week. However, you could also choose to only do one section a week if you are crunched for time. If you want to understand the Jewish roots of the Eucharist, this book is for you. If you are friends with a bunch of Protestants who say the Eucharist is a symbol and not the actual Body and Blood of Jesus, then reading this book will provide you Biblical examples for next time they say this. In reality, any Catholic with a pulse would benefit from this 5 star book. Pick it up from Our Sunday Visitor and deepen your appreciation of the Eucharist during The Year of Faith.

Great Bible study for Lent

For Lent this year I decided to add a Bible study to my morning prayer and devotional time and chose this book by Fr. Pacwa. I went through about 1/3 to 1/2 of each chapter per morning, taking about 20-30 minutes, which included looking up Bible passages. This book does an excellent job of explaining the meaning of The Eucharist, and tying it back to the Old Testament and Jewish tradition, as well as the practices of the Early Christians. I have a richer understanding of the Eucharist, and a more profound appreciation for the miracle that happens at every Mass. I highly recommend this Bible study, which was perfect for a personal devotion but would also be great in a group setting.
