A challenge for cultural anthropologists because Berlin establishes the validity of his thesis

This is easily the most difficult book I have ever read, both because it deals exclusively in taxonomic nomenclature and because the the theory Berlin presents is a radical upheavel in the world of cultural anthropology and ethnobiology. How do human beings come to name, order, define and organize species of the natural world they live in? Intended for an audience of experts in the fields listed above, Berlin's work argues that there is a universal scheme shared by all human beings in the way we classify and organize our knowledge of the natural world. Furthermore, these classifications have a perceptual, cognitive basis rather than a functionalist one (i.e. culturally specific useful plants more likely to be known, named, utilized rather than colorful plants). Berlin presents volumes of scientifically valid evidence to support each claim he makes; his data are compiled from years of research with several different discrete cultural groups residing in neotropical rainforest areas.

But he's also terrified and clearly on the run from something, and Carter's not sure Tai's help is worth the risk of him trying to stake his own claim on the territory—or the risk that whatever he's running from finds him...

Nice, but a little incomplete

With a contemporary modern world setting, complete with cars and cellphones, this fantasy novella sets magic amidst everyday life.

I enjoyed this story, it’s a nice easy read. However, I think I would have liked a bit more world-building concerning the magic. Carter and Tai might be Earth wizards but they don’t seem to have any affinity with their element. It would also have been nice to have seen or learned a little more about the other types of wizards around them and what they could do. I would also have liked to have known more about the diseases than they just kill things.

The pacing is pretty slow too. For most of the book nothing happens. Carter meets Tai, they start to cure the disease, there are some time jumps, they spend lots of time together and they help Carter’s sister move house, but it’s not until the last few chapters that any answers about Tai are revealed. The romance is also very tentative, with Tai blushing a lot while Carter reminds himself of why he doesn’t date Earth wizards, not that it matters, ’cause Tai doesn’t like him like that.

Then comes the epilogue, which feels very much tacked on the end because someone suggested it should be there, rather than because the story needed it. Normally I’m the last person to complain about extra sex scenes, but this one felt really out of place. It didn’t fit in with how Tai had acted throughout the book and how shy and tentative he’d been. They barely even got together by the end of the book, so the sudden leap into the epilogue didn’t quite work for me.

On the whole, though, I liked this. It didn’t blow me away, but it’s got a nice touch of magic, a friendly, slow-building romance and some likable characters. In all it’s okay.

Slightly Lacking...

What do you do when a mysterious guy shows up to your territory and has the ability to cure the disease that's taking over? Befriend him naturally. Carter's next in line to inherit the territory, but it's dying due to a disease he and his mother can't cure, only make it stagnant. Enter Tai. He is clearly running something or someone, but he can cure the disease...

The book is a bit slow paced. You're watching the friendship develop between Carter and Tai through out majority of the book; which is not bad... but it makes the epilogue seem out of place. It's more graphic than any other scene in the book, again... not bad, but it's like the whole book was PG-13 and then the epilogue is Rated R. Overall, I did enjoy the story and watching the friendship develop.

Great writing

Carter and his mother Rebekah are Earth Wizards trying to protect the territory they live in. A disease is spreading throughout the area, killing all the plants and trees. The Wizards feel a power surge and Carter goes to investigate. He discovers the mysterious Tai, another Earth Wizard, who is even more powerful than mother and son.

This story was a bit slow moving for me. The writing was great, but the story dragged in areas. I did enjoy the growing friendship between Carter and Tai. With that said, the epilogue was a shocker because the rest of the story was not as graphic. It could have worked without the one-time sex scene.

While the Wizard World was creative, it was chaotic and confusing in parts. The suspense party of the story worked well, even though it dragged. All in all, this was an ok story that left me not wanting more.

Delicious

When I first found out about this book, I could not wait to get it and try out recipes. It is even more than I have hoped for. It is not only for people who are into macrobiotics or raw foods, but also for anyone who wants to eat 'live' and healthy food without compromising on flavour (or amount). Recipes are easy to follow and dishes easy to make...and taste absolutely divine! The book is in many ways educational as well. It is about learning, for some of us, a new style of preparing food, eating, living and looking after our (long-suffering) bodies. Thanks, Dunja, for that!

This book is not for beginners.

The directions and layout are very difficult to follow and though the ingredients sound wonderful, you will be hard pressed to find them all in one (or two) stores.

This was the perfect book for my kids and myself

I'm an avid car enthusiast with two kids.I found a lot of childrens books subject matter to be disconnect from my families interests. This was the perfect book for my kids and myself. The kids loved all the illustrations, and I loved providing all the sound effects. If you like cars and have children. This is a must have bed time story.

A masterpiece for learning pharmacology

This book is a superb piece of work from a teaching and a learning point of view. The author has put aside the traditional way of teaching a raw discipline, custommarily full of information difficult to retain. The subject is taken into a new dimmension, dividing by different clinical applications each one with a previous pathology, physiopathology, clinical characteristic and the pharmacological management required for each case. For example, respiratory emergencies are extensively reviewed, its different physiopathologies are described, the clinical characteristics common to each one, and the pharmacological treatment recommended in the prehospital setting. Every chapter is written the same way, thus providing the reader with a unique opportunity to blend over in a whole view the physiopatology, the clinical aspect and the pharmacological management in the field of an illness. I have no doubt this book contributes greatly to make young paramedics competent clinicians, and allow senior paramedics to hold their titles as Masters of Clinics.
