Don't waste your money

The title and reviews are very misleading. The book is only 60 pages and printed with such large font and spacing that I read it in less than an hour. Inside, you will find NOTHING of substance. This book is meant for people that are just now learning what a computer is. The author spends the first 20 pages explaining (with tons of spelling errors) that there are people called "hackers" that can access a computer without the owners permission. It's a 20 page definition of computer hacker that doesn't give you insight on how to protect yourself from them or anything. This is not a guide to anything at all. Don't waste your money. The SQL portion or "second book" is laughable. You will not learn a thing from this book. The other reviews are trolling you. Spend your money on something else.

Very clear and well written book

I'm a college student and this was the assigned text to read for my Sales Management class. This book was very easy to understand. The concepts were explained, so that even someone, such as myself who has zero experience in sales could understand what the authors meant. Most textbooks contain useless information, but this one had information that I could use in my life once I graduate from college (example: how to be a team builder and ways to approach being in sales).

An armchair account with erroneous facts

Clearly written from an arm chair by reading nothing more than secondhand newspaper accounts. Chafe makes the mistake of many a professor - he has no first hand experience or knowledge in any government position. He merely parrots newspaper accounts. Many of his facts are just plan erroneous. For example, "19 of the 9/11 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia." There were only 19 hijackers.
I returned this to buy historical accounts from persons actually in the arena of action. Chafe clearly was not and it show.

Sloppy History - Don' Buy

This book was assigned as a part of the reading for a course on American History for most of the last century. Let me make it very clear that I am not an historian. I suspect an American Historian could really take this book apart.

I was first bothered by the anecdotal, uncheckable, comments. (e.g. Nixon was "sadistic"??) But then, when we did the World War II reading for which I had some background, it became clear the book was not to be trusted at all. Here are some observations concerning World War II only.

Page 108: "the alliance they both knew was soon to come" and Page 109: paragraph 2: "he knew that within hours, the country would be involved in war with Germany and Italy as well."

These speak to the minds of FDR and Churchill and both are suspicious. (no footnote) The first is very contrary to Churchill's own words as to his reaction to Pearl Harbor in his history (The Grand Alliance p 539 . "So we had won after all...England would live...") As to the second, Germany had no treaty obligation to aid Japan and it was, I believe, only Hitler's decision.

Page 108: "Congress endorsed the "lend-lease" plan resoundingly. Soon thereafter, Roosevelt proposed `trading' the right to use various British bases...for sending more than fifty destroyers to England..."

The vote was not "resounding." A strong majority of Republicans in both Houses voted against the plan. The destroyer-base deal came first. Roosevelt didn't "propose" it to Congress, but did it on his own.

Page 109: "the secret plans to send thousands of Japanese airplanes over the Pacific to drop their lethal bomb loads on Pearl Harbor... More than three thousand lives were lost, virtually every ship sunk or seriously damaged...several aircraft carriers had left port."

Thousands?? 300-400 would be correct. And "send... over the Pacific" makes it sound like they were based in Japan, not on carriers. In fact about 2400 lives were lost. Eighteen ships were sunk or severely damaged; I couldn't find a total number of ships, but am sure it was much larger than eighteen, contrary to the "virtually every" statement. As to aircraft carriers, it would be more precise and accurate to say: ALL THREE of the carriers in the Pacific fleet were absent (NOT had left port) from Pearl Harbor during the bombing. (You can hardly say the Saratoga had "left port" when it had spent a year on the west coast refitting.) (He also really should say something about the importance of carriers here. This was the key to the lack of Japanese success at Pearl Harbor. Also, see next.)

Page 115: "Admiral Nimitz's carrier-based planes destroyed four Japanese warships in the Battle of Midway."

More than four "warships" were destroyed; what was far more important (and might be what he is trying to say) was that ALL FOUR carriers used by Japan at Midway were destroyed (as well as one US carrier). These were four of the six used at Pearl Harbor. I believe Japan had only 8 to 10 (depending on what you count) carriers at the time.

Page 118: "In 1939 a group of scientists headed by Albert Einstein--all political refugees from Nazi tyranny---warned Roosevelt that the Germans were moving full speed ahead on using atomic fission to develop a nuclear chain reaction that would create an atomic bomb. Quickly, FDR set up a scientific team to promote the "Manhattan Project,..."

Einstein in no sense "headed" the group; he was not an atomic physicist and the possibilities had to be explained to him by Leo Szilard, the one who took the initiative. The Germans were NOT moving full speed ahead; in fact, the whole possibility of the atomic bomb was highly speculative at the time. Read Einstein's letter (prepared by Szilard). FDR did NOT "quickly... set up" anything; he had to be prodded in a year with another letter.

Page 118: "Five days after Nagasaki, Emperor Hirohito announced he would accept the allies demand for Japan's unconditional surrender.

There is NO mention of the Russian declaration of war which some historians believe to be a more important reason for the surrender. (Although this is a United States history, the almost total omission of the overwhelming Russian contributions against Germany gives a highly misleading impression.) One can quibble on the use of the term "unconditional surrender" in connection with the Potsdam Declaration.

About the Author

D. Brendan Nagle is Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Southern California, where he had appointments in the departments of history and classics.� He was research associate at the American Academy in Rome and the American School of Classical Studies at Athens in 1970 and 1999.� From 1976 to 1983 he was chairman of USC’s History Department.� He is the author or coauthor of six books and has published over 50 articles and reviews in such journals as: American Historical Review, American Journal of Archaeology, Ancient History Bulletin, Athenaeum, Historia, Journal of American Ethnic History, Polis, L’Antiquit� classique, Review of Metaphysics, Rheinisches Museum f�r Philologie, and Transactions of the American Philological Society.� He received USC’s Social Science Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1984.

Dull, sad, and uninspired

I usually love history, but somehow Nagle has managed to take the Greeks and Romans and make them BORING. My favorite period of history, and it's dry, dusty, and uninteresting when Nagle tells it. Unfortunately, my honors class decided this was the textbook we had to use.

On a more critical note professionally, I don't like history texts where the historian presents emotions rather than facts. There are numerous points throughout the book where Nagle says things like "Naturally, such and such made no sense" or where he errs more on the side of storytelling than being a historian. History should certainly tell a story, but it should be unfettered by the historian's personal opinions whenever possible, and not colored with emotional narrative.

About the Author
S. K. (Kip) Robisch is a Assistant Professor of English at The University of Indianapolis, where he teaches creative writing and literature. He has published creative nonfiction, short stories, and scholarship. He works with the Indiana Writers Center as an occasional instructor and gives book talks and facilitates discussions for the Indianapolis/Marion County Public Libraries. He grew up in Vineland, New Jersey, and has lived in Montana and New Mexico for all-too-short periods of time. Among his favorite hiking places in the U.S. are the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone National Park, the three canyons of Bandelier National Monument, and the Black Lake trail of Rocky Mountain National Park.

At the very least, a howling good read

This book by S. K. Robisch is a truly exceptional piece of writing. It blends an enormous amount of research with a clarity that is rare in many such works. It is impressively backed with scholarship from a variey of fields as diverse as animal biology, psychology, history, and tribal spirituality. Robisch also makes use of images of the wolf in popular culture, such as fairytales and the current fascination with werewolf lore, to broaden the public perception of this flesh and blood entity. The point is made that the fate of the wolf and the fate of humanity itself may be more intimately bound together that might be imagined from casual observation. This book is no casual investigation of the complex relationships and systems shared by both man and wolf. The reader is invited to both observe the real lives and habits of wolves and to enter into the realm of myth and the archetype of the wolf as presented in American and world literature. The point is made several times that this creature that is so familiar to us is in fact a great unknown--a true mystery that invites exploration. The possible paradox presented here may be that even though we are invited in to examine this wonderful and wonderous animal, the animal itself may be best served if we simply left it alone.
